Student ends life by jumping from chairlift (Dolly): Father claims depression
A tragic incident took place in Chakoti, Azad Kashmir, where a second-year student, Laiba Fatima Abbasi, succumbed to depression and jumped into the Jhelum River. Laiba jumped as he reached the middle of the river by chairlift (dolly), after which he was seen drowning in the rushing water. The search for the body is still ongoing.
Laiba Fatima Abbasi’s father, in a statement given to the police, said that his daughter had recently passed her second year examination and was suffering from severe depression for the past few weeks. According to the father, Laiba took this extreme step due to the severity of the depression.
According to chairlift operator Ali Zia, Laiba refrained from talking too much about herself and suddenly jumped when she reached the middle of the river in the chairlift. Ali Zia said that Laiba was seen drowning in the water before she understood anything.
The body was swept away by the strong currents of the river Jhelum, and local rescue teams are busy searching for the body. This incident is another example of chairlift (dolly) accidents in the Jhelum Valley, where similar incidents have occurred in the past. Locals have expressed deep regret over the accident and have raised questions about the safety arrangements of the chairlift system.
This is not the first time that there has been an incident of death by jumping from a chairlift in Jhelum river. Many precious lives have been lost before because of these unsafe chairlifts. The local administration is being urged to review the safety arrangements of these chairlifts to avoid such accidents in the future.
Depression and mental health problems are a growing concern, especially among young people. This incident has once again highlighted the seriousness of mental health issues. Psychologists say that parents, teachers, and social circles need to pay attention to the mental health of young people to prevent them from such a serious situation.
It is the responsibility of the government bodies to ensure the safety of the chairlift (dolly) system and organize public awareness programs to provide immediate help to those suffering from diseases such as depression.
This tragic incident of Laiba Fatima Abbasi is not only a shock for a family but also indicates the need for the entire social and government system to take steps to improve the mental health and chairlift system.
